Sacred Heart Boys Golf Claims 9th Straight State Title
For the ninth consecutive season, the Sacred Heart Knights boys golf team took home the KSHSAA 2A State trophy. In the two-day event in Dodge City, the Knights compiled a team score of 612, which was 57 strokes better than second place Ellinwood, which put up a 669. Cair Paravel Latin School out of Topeka finished third place at 685.
The individual champion in 2A was Drew Heinz of Ellinwood. He shot a 5-under 66 on day one and followed it up with a 3-over 74 on day two. He finished at 2-under and 140 for the tournament, which was eight strokes ahead of second place finisher Michael Matteucci of Sacred Heart, who shot a 148, 6-over par. Luke Newell of Sacred Heart finished in third at 150 and Walker Tuttle tied for fourth for the Knights with a 153. Hunter Newell finished just outside of the top ten, taking 11th with a total score of 161.
In Class 3A at Emporia, Hesston won the team title with a score of 635, 11 strokes ahead of second place Sabetha with 646. Wichita Collegiate finished third at 654, but their top golfer was Lundin Esterline, who took home the individual championship in 3A. He shot 4-under on day one and two-over on day two, finishing the meet at 2-under and a total score of 140. Dylan Esch of Southeast of Saline tied for ninth place with a two-day total of 156.
In 1A at Hesston, South Gray won the team title by 45 strokes with a score of 602 ahead of Hutchinson Central Christian with 657. Elkhart finished third with a 674. The individual champion was Central Christian's Cael Kooiman who won by just one stroke, finishing the two-day meet with a 136, ahead of South Gray's Gavin Wahl who shot a 137. From the nckssports.com area, Osborne's Dawson Lantz finished tied for 33rd out of 56 golfers, posting a total score of 176 for the meet.
