Kattenberg and Hrabe Named Linn's Successors at Smith Center

After Nick Linn announced his retirement as the Smith Center Lady Red volleyball and basketball coach for the past 35 seasons, that left vacancies in those positions.  On Monday night at the USD 237 Board of Education's monthly meeting, those positions were filled.  Long-time assistant coach Denyse Kattenberg will be the next head coach of the Lady Red volleyball program and Brandon Hrabe will take over the Lady Red basketball program.

Kattenberg has been coaching with Linn off and on since the fall of 2004.  After taking a four year break from the fall of 2013 to the spring of 2017, she returned to the staff for volleyball in the fall of 2017 and basketball in the fall of 2018 through the present.  Kattenberg will step aside from basketball to watch her son Dominick compete in wrestling.  Her new position as head volleyball coach will be the first high school head coaching job of her career.  She has spent time as a junior high head basketball coach at Eastern Heights from 2002-2004 and at Smith Center for a season.

Hrabe will also be a high school head coach for the first time, taking over the Smith Center girls basketball program.  He has been the junior high coach at Smith Center for the past three seasons, racking up a 33-12 record in that time.  He also has experience coaching club basketball in Nebraska over the past few seasons.

Denyse Kattenberg joined KD Country 94 and Z 96.3 "The Lake" Sports Director Dusty Deines on the Sports Ticket Wednesday morning and Brandon Hrabe joined the show on Thursday.  Those interviews are at the links below.
